Ruahine Forest Park, Palmerston North has evolved into one of the most well known Tourist Attractions in Palmerston North for its great recreational opportunities. Spread across a total area of 94,000 ha, Ruahine Forest Park, Palmerston North consists of beautiful bush-covered ranges which provide with endless options for tramping, hunting, cross country skiing, snowboarding, rafting, kayaking, fishing, swimming and camping with its excellent network of tracks and huts. The western side of the park is managed by the Palmerston North Area Office of the Wanganui Conservancy while the East Coast Hawkes Bay Conservancy manages the eastern side of the park from the Napier Area Office.
Ruahine Forest Park in Palmerston North extends almost 100 km from the Taruarau River in the north to the Manawatu Gorge in the South. During the 1930s the rounded open top of the ranges were attractive for the ski enthusiasts, and the result was the formation of the Rangiwahia Ski Club in 1938. However, today there is little evidence remaining of the former ski-field. Rangiwahia Hut, the site of old ski field, is a popular destination for trampers. You can park at the end of Renfrew Road and tramp to the tussock tops and Rangiwahia Hut along either Rangiwahia Track or Dead Man's Track. If the weather is clear, you can have beautiful views across the countryside to Mt Taranaki and the volcanoes of Tongariro National Park. Due to snowfall, this area is popular among the local people for cross-country skiing and snowboarding.
You will find plenty of things to do in Ruahine Forest Park, Palmerston North. A range of walks and tramps are available in this area. Ride through the Takapari Road which takes an 11 km climb up to ‘A Frame Hut’. You can also ride a further 5 km along the tops. This stretch also provides opportunities for four wheel driving.
