Hobbiton Movie Set and Farm Tours

Hobbiton Movie Set and Farm Tours are must as part of your Rotorua Tours. Visit the remnants of the original Hobbiton village set from The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy on this two-hour guided tour. The Hobbiton movie set now lies on its natural state. It is actually a picture-perfect private farmland near Matamata in the North Island of New Zealand. Hobbiton Movie Set and Farm Tours also offer an authentic Sheep Farm Experience. Don’t miss the opportunity to watch how the shearer handles the sheep, pat the gentle creatures and bottle feed the pet lambs.

The best part of Hobbiton Movie Set and Farm Tours is that you can see the 17 of the original 37 hobbit holes and some structures from the film set which are still present. Experience the breathtaking views across the Kaimai Ranges from the gentle green hills of the farm which is a working sheep and beef unit. It was back in September 1998 when Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema came across the Alexander family farm during a search for film sites and they found the out-of-the-world views and rolling country side of the Alexander farm resembling that of Middle Earth as described by J.R.R Tolkien, the author of The Lord of the Rings. Even, the towering pine tree, later re-named the party tree, was also perfectly placed in front of the lake.

The Alexander family has been here on the 500 hectare property since 1978. The property includes a flourishing sheep and beef cattle business. The Alexander farm runs 300 beef cattle and more than 13,000 of New Zealand’s famous sheep on the verdant hills.

Construction of the site started in March 1999 and it rook nine months to complete it. The construction required heavy earthmoving machinery provided by the New Zealand Army. Throughout this period and filming, activities on the site were under strict security due to the commercial restraints by the movie company. Filming began in December 1999 continuing for three months.

Experience the unique atmosphere with the Hobbiton Movie Set and Farm Tours. You will also find here on the site The Shire’s Rest, a new café which can act as a great venue for functions, conferences or other occasions.
