Rotorua is famous for geothermal activity. There are a number of geysers. Rotorua Travel: Airports

The Rotorua International Airport was initially opened in 1963, with a 1378m x 30m pitch runway by substituting the old Whakarewarewa Aerodrome. The old Aerodrome was located just north of Sala Street and is currently a housing area. The present airport has had its runway extended to 1622m in 2002 and is at present extending the runway north by 150m in order to allow the Airbus A320 to land there.
