The park borders the beautiful Lake McLaren. It is built behind a dam constructed for hydro-electricity generation. One can camp on any open, grassed area, except Cherry Bay.
How to Get There
McLaren Falls Park is 15 minutes south of Tauranga. From state highway-2, one needs to turn off to state highway 29. This highway leads to McLaren Falls Road.
Attractions and Facilities
Ridge Track- The ridge track in the centre of the park passes through a spectacular grove of ponga tree ferns and offers spectacular views of the park.
Pine Tree Knoll track- This track requires moderate walking of 35 to 45 minutes. The walking track zigzags to the summit, where one can have good all-round views.
Rimu Track- Rimu Track centers on the main native bush area in the park. An access track leads through the best of the bush area.
Waterfall Walk- A gentle walk takes one to a waterfall at the head of a stream. One can return down alongside the other bank of the stream. Glowworms are often visible along the banks. Picnic areas with coin-operated gas barbecues can be found in plentiful in and around the park. Camping and hostel accommodation are available. Public toilets are available at a number of points.
