Te Puna Quarry Park, Tauranga has been developed by a dedicated band of volunteers. With painstaking efforts they have transformed a disused quarry into a world class park. The park is situated at the end of Quarry Road which runs off State Highway 2, 18 kilometer north of Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty, North Island of New Zealand. One can have spectacular panoramic view of the Bay of Plenty from the upper levels of the park. The quarry today boasts of ponds, tree ferns, large number of cymbidium orchids, native tree plantings and exotics such as vireya. Special garden areas which are being developed include irises, cacti and succulents, an Australian area, a native Arboretum, a Bonsai corner, a South African area and a Palm Grove.
Te Puna Quarry Park, Tauranga is a place to enjoy. Stunning views and great art can be enjoyed amidst tranquility. Throughout the Park one can come across stone sculptures by local artists. There are over thirty works of outdoor art on permanent display. Mediums used include Hinuera Stone, pottery, and ponga, which is tree fern trunk. Sizes ranges from small pottery pieces to man-sized stone sculptures.
Today, the quarry has gained wide acceptance as an exhibition area for outdoor art and also for weddings. The walking tracks are easy for a comfortable walk. There are many off-shoots and alternative walks off the main track of the park. So walkers can enjoy the various gardens and sculptures on the way. The park is increasingly becoming popular with families and those just keeping fit.
The award winning park also hosts regular events like festivals and concerts and is continually expanding to accommodate even more for your enjoyment. The park is open every day during. However it is closed at nights. If the main gates are closed, the park is still open to pedestrians and cars can be parked outside the gates. Admission to the park is free but donations are welcome.
