BATS Theatre

BATS Theatre is a cherished venue located in the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes building at 1 Kent Terrace. This place is also one of the most visited tourist attractions in Wellington. The venue itself has had a long and diverse history. It started originally in the 1930s as The Savage Club, a dance hall and venue for amateur theatre. If you are thinking about what to do during the night

When you visit the BATS Theatre, you will see a small, charming 1930’s building with marble steps and a pair of old wooden doors. As you step through the doors you will enter into the foyer which houses the ticket booth and ‘The Pit’. As you continue through the second set of double doors and enter the bar area, you will start to appreciate the intimate nature of BATS. This familiarity continues into the auditorium with its steeply raked seating block which allows all audience members an excellent view of the stage.

The stage of the BATS Theatre has a sprung floor and covers an area of 6.75 meters deep by 8.75 meters wide. The lighting grid is set into the ceiling 4.45 meters above the floor. The theatre also has a small lighting and sound box built into the back wall at the top of the seating block. The dressing rooms in the BATS Theatre are equipped with toilet and shower facilities. The BATS theatre is a unique venue in Wellington offering the most intimate of theatre experiences. The theatre is ideally located opposite Downstage Theatre in Courtenay Place, the heart of the city's entertainment zone.

The BATS Theatre is currently New Zealand's strongest developmental theatre and has an annual programme of between 50 to 60 shows. The fundamental value of BATS Theatre has stayed true to its previous ambitions. It constantly seeks to build a new and younger audience for theatre by presenting diverse, relevant and challenging theatre. The theatre focuses on being accessible for both its audience and incoming theatre companies. BATS also give support and a learning platform to the many developing arts practitioners.
