| Downstage Theatre |
Downstage Theatre that began as an alternative theatre in 1964 is today one of the most popular tourist attractions in Wellington. This theatre was made by the joint attempt of a group of Wellingtonians including the academics, lawyers and business people desperate for a richer cultural nightlife. They joined together with the theatre people to make it happen. In its form and content, Downstage Theatre in Wellington was very much a product of the 1960s social revolution.
Downstage Theatre has over its forty years ‘parented' a range of related activities and has been a central support system for other theatres. It has reinvented itself at least a dozen times. The Downstage Upfront explores the evolution of Downstage, characterizes its changing stages of life, investigates the means by which it has managed to survive let alone succeed, and celebrates its achievements and continued existence.
Facilities at Downstage Theatre in Wellington:-
The box office of the Theatre is located on the ground level of Downstage Theatre, 12 Cambridge Terrace, corner of Courtenay Place and Cambridge Terrace.
The payment can be done by cheques, eftpos and major credit cards. So, do not worry if you suddenly make a plan to enjoy a play.
The Downstage Theatre has a uniquely flexible auditorium, along with at least 7 different configurations. This means that the floor plan of the stage and seats may change or move around from show to show. This is done to increase the effect of the show and to help in giving the guests an excellent view.
The theatre also has a bar, the Patron Bar in the Auditorium level. This bar is used for small group functions or for interval drinks. The Middle Bar at the theatre is a highlight for many patrons. The house bookings make good use of the Middle Bar for pre-show drinks and nibbles.
The Downstage Theatre houses a recently renovated café with a selection of wines, beers, tea and L'affare coffee. The atmosphere is inviting and refreshing to hang out with friends and enjoy a good break.
