The National Library is one of the main tourist attractions in Wellington. It is one of the main libraries in New Zealand and stores the legal deposits of the country. The main purpose of National Library is to conserve and enrich the diverse tradition and culture of the country. The National Library in Wellington was established in the year 1965 when the General Assembly and the National Library Service was combined together. The library was officially opened to the public in the year 1987. The National Library is well accessible and is close to important landmarks like the New Zealand Parliament and Court of Appeal.
National Library, Wellington houses rare books, historical relics and literary and artistic masterpieces. The library is divided into 3 sections which are the National Library General Collections, the National Library Schools Collection and the Alexander Turnbull Library collections. There are around 1,515,172 items in the General Collections while the Alexander Turnbull Library stores around 5,333,500 items. The General Collections provide knowledge and expertise mainly for research purposes. The National Library Schools Collection exhibits wide variety of books and literary pieces on various subjects like religion, botany, science, philosophy, literature and lots more.
The National Library in Wellington consists of an autonomous governance body which is a unique feature. The library assists various primary and secondary schools by providing them useful information and by organizing workshops for school children. It has around 15 school service centers and 3 curriculum information service centers throughout the country.
The Alexander Turnbull Library is one of the main sections of the National Library. It is named after Alexander Turnbull. The museum is one of the main centers of storing research materials in the country. Most of the documentary research collections of New Zealand are located here.
Apart from exhibiting various items, National Library, Wellington has also formed a partnership with the National Digital Heritage Archive to develop a digital archive of rare items.
