History in Niger

History in Niger is very illustrious. History in Niger tells us much about the glorious past of the land that we must all know. Niger witnessed the destiny of numerous great African empires and realms. If you venture on Niger tours, make sure that learn about the history of the land before hand. The Songhaï Empire was the first ruler. The empire stretched from the Niger River region and ended to the existing Niger-Malian border. The town of Gao was the capital of the city. During the 15th and 16th centuries, the empire rose to greater heights under the rule of Sonni Ali Ber.

History in Niger is indeed very intriguing as it tells us about many dynasties. The Kanem-Bournou Empire under the leadership of Idriss Alaoma is one of them, which incorporated Kanem and stretched till Kaouar and the Aïr. Many Hausa kingdoms between the Songhaï and the Bornou were to be found here during this period. There were many independent kingdoms as well and they had become successful hubs of trade and learning. They were self-sufficient and very prosperous. They were capable of defending themselves from the attacks led by the Songhaï and Bornou.

In 1916-1919, the Tuareg revolt occurred in the Aïr. It was in 1900, that the nation became a military territory. In 1922, Niger became a French colony. French West Africa was controlled from Paris via a Governor General in Senegal and Dakar. However, it was in 1958, that Niger had become an independent Republic inside the French community. The constitution was adopted on November 8, 1960.

The military government lead by Lt.- Col. Seyni Koutché suspended the constitution. After the demise of President Seyni Koutché, Colonel Ali Saibou was elected to run the nation. A new constitution was drafted, after a National Conference was held in 1991. Mahamane Ousmane came to power after the presidential elections in March 1993. He was expelled by Col. Ibrahim Baré Mainassara in the year 1996. But he was murdered in April 1999. History in Niger speaks of the different dynasties, the French rule and the political leaders of the country.
