Zinder, second largest city in Niger, is located 535 miles away from the capital city of Niger, Niamey, towards the east. The city of Kano is 149 miles away from Zinder. Zinder is commonly called Damagaram by the locals. Zinder was the the first capital of Niger during French colonialism. The Sultan of Damagaram had his residence here. Presently Zinder city consists of 3 parts- Birni which is the old town; Zengou; Sabon Gari or the new town situated between Birni and Zengou. Other neighborhoods of the city are Karkada, Garin Mallam and Gawon Kollia. The city is landscaped by granite rocks.
