Zengou Quarter, Zinder is located on the northern side of town. There are many mud brick houses and commercial buildings at Zengou Quarter, These structures represent the Hausa architecture. Zinder is one of the important places in Niger. To its southeast corner is the Birnin Quarter. The area in between these two areas is the commercial center of Zinder.
Zinder is the second largest city of the country. The city was occupied by the French in 1899 and became the first capital of the country after it became a military territory. The tourist attractions in Zinder include the Sultan's Palace and the Grande Mosque, both of which were built in the 19th century. The Sultan's Palace is still visited by people, who come here for advices on different issues like marriage and land settlements. One has to take an appointment to meet the Sultan through the many guides that are available.

The city of Zinder is divided into three major areas. These are the old town of Birni, the place of Zengou and Sabon Gari. Birni has a museum which is worth visiting to know about the place. Sabon Gari is famous as the commercial center of the area.
Other places of interests include the Birnin Quarter, the Grande Marche and the Residence of Heinrich Barth. Grande Marche is an attractive place in the city. This is a Market Place and is very vibrant. Tourists can also visit the artisan center. At the center, one can buy some fine leather and silver works.

Zinder is the local hub for transportation. The roads from Zinder go as far as to Niamey, the capital and Kano in Nigeria.
