Duke Town Presbyterian Church, Calabar is regarded as one of the most prestigious church of Nigeria. Duke Town Presbyterian Church, Calabar is also a major tourist attraction in the city of Calabar.
Duke Town Presbyterian Church, Calabar was built in the year 1846 by the missionaries who belonged to the church of Scotlland.They came to visit this place in the year 1846 led by Rev. Hope Master ton Waddell and a church was set up. This church later on came to be known as the Duke Town Presbyterian Church, Calabar.In the year 1858 the church was constituted as the Presbytery of Biafra which later on became the Presbyterian Synod of Biafra in the year 1921.The church witnessed a remarkable growth until in 1945 the Presbyterian Church of Biafra was constituted, with the Synod as its highest court. During this year the control and administration of the church was handed over to the Nigerians. Thus the Presbyterian Church of Biafra became the Presbyterian Church of Eastern Nigeria in the year 1952.
In the year 1969 the integration was completed and the Church changed its name to the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria. In the year 1985 decision was taken to create regional synods with the general assembly.
Duke Town Presbyterian Church, Calabar belongs to the Holy Catholic or Universal Church. The church is regarded as one of the results of the Protestant Reformation that begun in the year 1517 AD.The church worships only one God i. e Lord Jesus Christ as the eternal Son of God who was crucified for trying to achieve salvation for human kind.
The church started humbly from Calabar in the year 1846 and as days went on it firmly established itself in Nigeria and congregations started to spread across the country. The Church has nine Regional Synods, over fifty Presbyteries and more than two thousand parishes. The church also has two of its branches in Benin and Togo.
Some of the Regional Synods can be found in Akwa (covering Akwa, Ibom State, with office in Uyo), Calabar (parts of Cross River State, with office in Calabar), and East (parts of Abia State, with office in Ohafia).
