In Portuguese the name Lagos Lagoon, Lagos means "lakes". The lagoon stretches about 50 kilometers in length and is about 13 kilometers wide. On the side of the lagoon you can find margins which are quite muddy and moist.

There is another branch of the Harbour which is also located off the channel. The Lagos Island and the Ikoyi Island is separated by this branch from the great sand pit which forms a coastline. Lagos Lagoon, Lagos stretches over a distance of more than 30 kilometers. The lagoon borders the northeastern and the eastern coasts of the city.
The waters of Lagos Lagoon, Lagos is not very deep. As such you will not find many ocean-going ships in lagoon. However you will get to see a large number of smaller barges and boats in lagoon. People on the west region of Lagoon depend mainly on water transport. This is because transportation by road is not that good enough in the western part of Lagos Lagoon, Lagos.
