The city is situated in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the center of Nigeria. Abuja was built as a planned city in the 1980s and it became Nigeria's official capital on December 12, 1991 replacing Lagos.

Since the country has various religious and ethnic divisions, it was planned to have the capital in a location deemed neutral to all parties. It was decided that Abuja, which is in the center, be the capital as it signified neutrality and national unity.

Weather in Abuja
The city experiences three types of weather each year. There is a warm, humid rainy season and a blistering dry season. Between these two seasons, is harmattan, which is characterized by the North East Trade Wind, with dust haze, intensified coldness and dryness. From April to October is the rainy season
