Lagos city is one of the visited Tourist Destinations in Nigeria. The city is the most populous in the country and is also the second most populous in Africa after Cairo. The city's metropolitan area is the 17th most populated region in the world. Lagos was the former national capital. It originated on islands such as Lagos Island which was separated by creeks.
History of Lagos
The city was a Yoruba settlement of Awori people called Eko. It was home to a number of warring tribes throughout centuries. It was also ruled by the Kingdom of Benin during its early history. In 1472 the Portuguese explorer Ruy de Sequeira visited this area and named it Lago de Curamo. Lagos was a major center of the slave trade from 1704-1851 when it was ruled by Yoruba kings. Oba Akitoye became the king in 1841 and tried to ban slave trading. But the merchants resisted the ban, deposed him and installed his brother Oba Kosoko as king.
In exile Oba Akitoye met with the British who banned slave trading in 1807. He got the support of the British and regained the throne in 1851. In 1861 Lagos was formally annexed as a British colony. With the establishment of the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria in 1914, Lagos was made the capital. From 1914 to 1991 it was the capital of Nigeria.
Getting to Lagos
By flight you can reach Lagos through the Murtala Mohammed International Airport. There are many flights to Abuja from international and domestic destinations. The city is well connected by highways and is also the end point of three Trans-African Highway routes.
Weather in Lagos
Lagos has a similar weather as the rest of southern Nigeria. The city experiences two rainy seasons with the heavy rains from April to July and the weaker rainy season from October and November. From August to September, is a short dry season while the longer dry season is from December to March. The dry season is characterized by harmattan winds from the Sahara Desert.
