To the north of Bodo at a distance of 33 km is Salstraumen, Bodo. The place is famous throughout the world as the fishing district and has panoramic views of the mountains of "Borrvasstindene". Salstraumen, Bodo is also popular to see the midnight sun between 3rd June and 14th July.
Salstraumen, Bodo provides easy catch of fish both from land and by boat. Large and different types of fishes can be caught here due to the strong current of the streams. The fishes mainly caught here include Colefish, catfish, skate, cod and sea bass. Colefish is the main catch though. The largest fish of the world, the colefish was found here with a weight of 22.7 kg.
Salstraumen, Bodo has the world's strongest water current in between high tides and low tides, in an interval of 6 hours. A mass of 400 cubic meter of salty water passes with a water speed of 20 knots in between Saltenfhorden and Skjerstadfjorden. A whirlpool is created by the strong forces of the water and has diameter of about 10 meters with a depth of 4 to 5 meters.
