The Meridian Column, Hammerfest was built in order to commemorate the completion of a joint Norwegian-Swedish-Russian survey to determine the size and shape of the earth. The base of this magnificent monument sits in the middle of a cobblestone circle with a diameter of 9 meters. The base of the Meridian Column, Hammerfest is based on an area of 20 by 20 meter which is again encircled by a small stone wall. The base of the memorial is 90 centimeter high. Made of polished marble, the Meridian Column, Hammerfest has a diameter of 50 centimeter.
The Meridian Column, Hammerfest carries an inlay inscription. This bilingual inscription is written both in Latin and Norwegian language. The column has a square top with small knobs that point towards the four cardinal points. On top of the knob, there is a globe with a pin at its top symbolizing the town. Both the top square and the globe at the Meridian Column, Hammerfest are made of bronze, which has become discolored in due course. There is a plaque displayed on the left side of the little stonewall. On this plaque you can read the history of this monument in 4 languages, Norwegian, English, German, Finnish.
The concrete slab beside the Meridian Column, Hammerfest was erected during a further survey in the year 1929. From here, you can enjoy the spectacular fine view of the town and the hills beyond it.
