History of Norway

History of Norway is one of the most interesting ones in the world. Home to the mighty and valiant Vikings, Norwegian History is the saga of gallantry. Archaeologists have found that the earliest human inhabitance in Norway dates back to as early as 10th Millennium BC. The historical background of Norway was incepted during the end of last ice age. The finds of Stone Age and Bronze Age are among the major attractions that facilitate tourism in Norway. History of Norway is a part and parcel of the culture and heritage of the country.

The earliest History of Norway starts from the Pre historic times. The inception of the modern day Scandinavia took place during the last phase of the last ice age. Gradually, it led to Stone Age and Bronze Age. The History of Norway from the days of the rule of Roman Empire to 800 AD is known as Iron Age in the country. But the most fascinating and famous period in the History of Norway is the Viking Age. From 800 to 1066 AD, Norway experienced the maximum expansion of Norwegians as raiders, explorers, settlers and traders.

The Vikings, aboard on longships, raided a large part of coastal Europe. This part of the History of Norway is thus also a dark age. It was in this age that the first consolidation of the kingdom of Norway took place. A major change in History of Norway came with the introduction of Christianity around 1000 AD. Norway received its first literate king Olaf Kyrre during 1067 AD. Gradually the church expanded its influence on the country and in 1152 or 1153 AD, the archdiocese of Nidaros was established. The other important incidents in the History of Norway are the Kalmar Union and the union with Denmark.
