The Lillehammer Art Museum in the city of Lillehammer is a major crowd puller. The Lillehammer Art Museum was established in 1st April, 1994. The Lillehammer Art Museum's permanent collection comprises of Norwegian visual art from the 1800's till today. The Lillehammer Art Museum is a private foundation and the foundation is a further development of the 67 year old institution, Lillehammer Bys Malerisamling.
The museum holds temporary exhibitions of Norwegian and international art. The Lillehammer Art Museum has in store Norway's most important and representative works from the year 1820 to 1939. The Lillehammer Art Museum came up with the generous collection of 2 private collectors. In 1921, the merchant and local patriot Einar Lunde donated over 100 paintings to the city of Lillehammer. In 1958, renowned antique dealer Oscar Johannessen from Oslo contributed his collection of paintings from the 1800's to the institution.
At the time of the 17th Winter Games, the Lillehammer Art Museum was a main cultural forum in the city. Architect Erling Viksjos building from 1963 was remodeled and to it and was joined a new distinctive building designed by Snohetta Architecture and Landscape. Later sculptor Bard Breivik created two buildings between the sculptured garden in which stone and water are the main elements.
At present the most prestigious collection includes the paintings and drawings by J. C. Dahl, Hans Gude, Adolph Tidemand, Erik Werenskiold, Eilif Peterssen, Christian Krogh, Frits Thaulow, Edvard Munch and others. The Lillehammer Painters including Kristen Holbo, Thorvald Erichsen and Lars Jorde are well represented.
The Lillehammer Art Museum is closed every Monday. It remains open from 11 am to 4 pm on Tuesday to Sunday. You can also buy artistic postcards, posters, catalogues, art books and handicraft products that are for sale from the shop.
