The Maihaugen Open-Air Museum, Lillehammer is one of the major tourist attractions in the city of Lillehammer. To be found in the southeastern outskirts of the town, the Sandvig Collection was founded by the dentist Anders Sandvig in 1887. In 1904 the museum was moved to Maihaugen. The museum consists of more than 100 old buildings all of which is re-erected in the park in their original forms and furnished with old domestic equipment and implements.

The oldest building in the collection is a stave church from Garmo. This is one of the most popular attractions inside the museum. This is a large farm of Bjornstad with 27 buildings.
The Maihaugen Open-Air Museum, Lillehammer also tells the story of people in the Gudbrandsdalen Valley for the last 300 years, of life between the wars in the inland town of Lillehammer and of homes and domestic environments in the 20th Century. The Maihaugen Open-Air Museum presents a rural society through churches, homes, farm yards and tools from the Gudbrandsdalen valley which extends north from Lillehammer. You can also witness the traditional farming methods and handicrafts that are on show. Guided tours are provided in several languages. The museum exhibits create lots of interest among adults and children, providing experiences and knowledge.
The Maihaugen Open-Air Museum is a participant in organizing preservation work for threatened domestic animal breeds in Norway, enabling the museum to illustrate local pastorals. On certain days in the year the museum visitors can see the animals at the Jorstad farm. Plant species and domestic animal breeds that are common in the Gudbrandsdalen Valley are also to be found at the museum.
