Barentsburg, Longyearbyen is the only Russian settlement that you have in this region. Today it is one of the popular Longyearbyen Tourist Attractions. This place was named after a Dutch explorer Willem Barentz. This person had discovered this settlement in the year 1596. A lot of mining work initially took place here. This place has a lot of historical importance associated to it. The Cold War had seen a lot of activities taking place in this region. Till date it is the only Russian settlement that is still operating in Longyearbyen. This feature makes Barentsburg, Longyearbyen a unique tourist site.

The main inhabitants of Barentsburg, Longyearbyen are the Ukrainians and Russians. The state owned Arcticugol trust operates here. Barentsburg is located at a distance of about 55 kilometers from Longyearbyen. Helicopters and boats are the only means to reach here. By helicopters it will take you 15 minutes to arrive at this tourist place. The boat will take 2 to 3 hours to reach Barentsburg, Longyearbyen. During summer you can also avail certain passenger ferries to reach here. Cargoes also ply during this season.

Go for sightseeing tours during your trip to this place. A small wooden chapel stands here. It was established in 1996 to commemorate the miners whose plane crashed. The there is the Pomor Museum. This building has a variety of rocks, stuffed polar bears and dinosaur footprint. For entering this museum you need to pay an admission fees.

Certain local attractions remind tourists of the Russian expedition in Barentsburg, Longyearbyen. One of these is the Lenin statue and Miru Mir. The adjoining mountain is perfect for hiking. There are also two swimming pools and other outdoor activities. There is a cultural center at Barentsburg, Longyearbyen called the Polar Star.
