Vigeland Sculpture Park, Oslo

The innumerable tourist attractions in Oslo have made this place an amazing tourist hub. One of the most famous and top rated places of interest is the Vigeland Sculpture Park, Oslo. Situated at a distance of three kilometers to the north-western part of the main center of the city, this park is a fantabulous spot whereby tourists can get to view some of the marvelous sculptural works and other masterpieces. Covering a sprawling area of 80 acres the Vigeland Sculpture Park, Oslo draws a considerable rate of tourists all year round.

The park houses 212 sculptures made of granite and bronze produced by Gustav Vigeland. Originally the statues are formed out of clay and then the craftsmen gave those their final touch. There is a bloc of length 850 meters which is classified into six different sections where the several art and sculptural marvels can be seen. Those six sections are - The Bridge, The Fountain, The Main Gate, The Wheel of Life, The Children's Playground and The Monolith Plateau.

The Main Gate is made of wrought iron and granite. Constructed in 1926, it is an impressive feature to be noted while entering the park. It is the entranceway leading to the park. This main gate comprises of two common gates and five major gates. There are two gate houses with roofs made of copper.

Between the Main Gate and the Fountain, visitors will get to note a Bridge with a length and width of 100 meters and 15 meters respectively. Made of bronze, tourists can see here the famous statue Sinnataggen which refers to a 'little angry boy'.

Just after crossing the bridge, visitors will notice the Children's Playground. It comprises of eight statues made of bronze reflecting postures of kids at play. Right in the middle of the playground is a granite structure on top of which is the sculpture of a fetus. The area looks further charming and pleasant by the presence of a pond where geese and ducks can be spotted swimming.

The Fountain formed out of bronze features 60 separate figurines of bronze. The concept of death giving way to a new life is depicted by the several sculptures of skeletons and kids in the arms of huge trees. Around the Fountain is a pattern of mosaic featuring white and black granite.

The Monolith Plateau forms a base comprising of stairs. Here visitors will get to see 36 statues portraying the concept of "circle of life". There are eight gates of wrought iron which lead to the plateau.

The Monolith is the highest spot in Vigeland Sculpture Park, Oslo. This towering structure is quite astounding and consists of 121 statues of human beings protruding upwards. This relate to the aspect of the human desire of moving towards the Divine.

The Wheel of Life structure features the depiction of a baby along with four people in harmonious coexistence. This symbolizes timeless existence and the journey of human beings from infancy to their death beds.

Other figures of human beings noticed in Vigeland Sculpture Park, Oslo feature various movements and postures such as dancing, wrestling, holding hands, hugging and running. The park is also a renowned picnic spot where visitors can enjoy several interesting games and it is an apt place for sunbathing too.
