Old Town, Stavanger

Old Town, Stavanger lies in the North West corner of the Market Square. On one side lies the Vagen and on the other lies Gamle Stavanger or Old Town of Stavanger. Old Town, Stavanger has a nautical and historical significance and today it is one of the most coveted tourist attractions in Stavanger.

There are several wooden houses in the region each of them boasts of an intricate architecture of yore. In the Nedre Strandgate region there is an old merchant's house which embodies the typical style of architecture that tourists get to see reflected in all the structures in the region. This merchant's house is now a Maritime Museum that details out the history of seafaring and other sea related items. This is an important sight for tourists who come to visit the pot city of Stavanger.

Old Town, Stavanger, also known as Straen, is today the largest surviving wooden house settlement in northern Europe. The beauty of the place lies in the innumerable little wooden houses that dot the area and the cobbled streets that dent the landscape. Only a couple of minutes away from the center of Gamle is the Cruise Port from where the cruise ships depart. Commercialization has not colored the region in any way.

All the houses in the Old Town are painted white. Only a very few of them are colored. Some of the houses are as old as 300 yrs and the more recent ones are not less than 100 yrs old. These houses are residential and few of them have been renovated to make them perfect for living. It is just not the houses that give the area a resplendent look. The playgrounds and parks and the small wooden benches along the streets also add to the beauty of the place.

The usual duration of a tour to Old Town, Stavanger is 30 minutes or more. Since the tourists have been pouring into the region for quite sometime now many cafes, shopping centers and public toilets have come up. Children love to spend time in the parks in Gamle. Some of the other regions that you can visit during your Stavanger travel are:

  • Gamle Skudeneshavn
  • Bjergsted Park
  • Breiavatnet
  • Blue Promenade
  • Valberget
  • Stavanger Pedestrian Shopping Streets
