Utstein Abbey, Stavanger is the best preserved medieval monastery in entire Norway. It was built in 1265 on the island of Mosterøy in Rennesoy municipality in Rogaland county. The monastery remained closed due to the Lutheran reformation in 1537 and served as a manor house for a long time.

Stavanger has a fjord to its north where you will find numerous islands and islets. Among them, Klosteroy is linked with the larger island of Mosteroy by a bridge. Utstein Abbey in Stavanger was built on a site which was an earlier royal farm. It was home to Augustine monks until the Reformation period when it fell into disrepair. Owned by the state since 1700, it remained a home and farmhouse until the restoration began. Restored over the last 100 years, it is a unique site in entire Norway. Nowadays, it is popular as a prestigious venue for concerts, weddings, meetings and also as a museum.

Utstein Abbey, Stavanger is open every day except Monday unless there is some special arrangement which might result in early closing on Saturday for weddings. Utstein Abbey in Stavanger is situated close to the road across the bridge to Fjoloy and the lighthouse there. The network of islands is now connected since the undersea tunnels of the E39 were built. You can arrive at this site by traveling 15 kilometers to the east end of Amoy and this gives the opportunity to have a good bike ride. If you are traveling from Stavanger, Utstein Abbey can be reached in approximately 30 minutes by driving through the Rennfast underwater tunnel.
