Market Square, Trondheim is a 12th Century marketplace which can be traced back to 12th Century. Located at the Gate intersection of Munkegate/Kongens, the Market Square is more commonly known as the Torvet- Market Square. Market Square, Trondheim was relocated in 1681 by town planner Johan Casper de Cicignon after a great fire destroyed parts of the city.
The most attractive aspect of the Market Square in Trondheim is the central statue of Olav Tryggvason, the founder of the city. The statue towers above the town square and is one of the renowned works of sculptor Wilhelm Rasmussen. Built in 1921, the large sundial is known to cast a shadow on the cobblestone clock face making a delightful spectacle.
Till date locals trek down to the centrally located Market Square to buy fresh fruits and vegetables from sellers who sit in the southern end of the town square. While the fresh food sellers sit on the southeastern side of the town square, the stalls selling jewellery and flowers are located at the south western side of the Square.
A must visit travel site, the Market Square attracts large number of leisure travelers frequenting the city every year making it one of the popular tourist attractions in Trondheim. The market square is also an excellent base to explore the surrounding destinations of Trondheim. For example one can easily view the Nidaros Cathedral from the square.
