Mehrgarh

Mehrgarh is one of the most significant Neolithic archeological sites. It is located on the Kachi plain of Pakistan and Balochistan. Mehrgarh is one of the ancient regions of Balochistan in South Asia. You can figure out very well that Mehrgarh is an old region from the farming (wheat and barley) and herding (cattle, sheep and goats) done in South Asia. Mehrgarh is one of the popular tourist attractions in Balochistan.

Mehrgarh is found close to the Bolan Pass, to the west side of the Indus River and in between the cities of Quetta, Kalat and Sibi. An archaeological team discovered Mehrgarh in the year 1974. The team was headed by a French archaeologist Jean-François Jarrige. A small farming village was the former settlement at Mehrgarh. The village is located in the northeast part of Mehrgarh.

The former residents of Mehrgarh stayed in houses made of mud bricks. They made fashionable tools with local copper ore. They provided lining to their large basket containers with bitumen. Six-row barley, einkorn and emmer wheat, jujubes and dates, and herded sheep, goats and cattle was cultivated by the people of Mehrgarh. In the later years, people concentrated much into crafts, which consisted of flint knapping, tanning, bead production, and metal working.

Presently Mehrgarh in Balochistan is seen as the forerunner to the Indus Valley Civilization. Professor Ahmad Hasan Dani said that the discoveries made at Mehrgarh completely altered the idea of the Indus Valley Civilization.

One of the major paths joining southern Afghanistan, Eastern Iran, the Balochistan hills and the Indus valley is the Kachi plain and Bolan valley. The Bolan valley is located at the Bolan Pass near Mehrgarh. This hilly region is situated on the western verge of the Indus Valley about 2500 BC. During this period a vast urban civilization came forth. This civilization was similar to the Mesopotamia and the ancient Egyptian empire.
