Quetta City, the capital of Balochistan Province is also nicknamed the 'fruit bowl of Pakistan'. It is a city rich in history and culture and is situated at an altitude of 1676-1900 meters above sea level. As far as the nomenclature of Quetta City is concerned it is believed that the place got its name from 'kwatkot', which is a Pashto word for 'fort'.

History of Quetta City:

Quetta was first mentioned by Mahmud of Ghazni. Very little is known of the history of the place prior to this. Alter the place came under the British Raj and remained under their dominion till in 1947 Pakistan got independence and Balochistan became an important Province

Geography of Quetta City:

Since Quetta City in Balochistan has a tropical desert kind of climate generally the atmosphere is dry. In the summer months the temperatures are around 42oC. As winter dawns the temperature falls considerably and the day temperature rarely exceeds 25oC. It is during the winter months that Quetta gets enough rainfall.

Language of Quetta City:

Urdu is the popular tongue. Other dialects that the people in Quetta use are Punjabi, Persian, Pushto, Balochi and Sindhi.

Since Quetta has been home to many settlers, the city reflects a confluence of cultures. The most conspicuous cultures are that of the Hazaras and the Ghaznis who were among the earliest settlers of Quetta.

Quetta International Airport is served by such airlines as Airblue, Shaheen Air International and Pakistan International Airport. Mostly domestic flights ply from here. Well connected roads and railways have also made transportation rather easy. Quetta Railway Station is one of the important stations in Pakistan. Taxis and private cars are also available.
