Airports in Islamabad refer to the Islamabad International Airport. The airport, which is also known as Chaklala Airbase, shares its current location with the Pakistan Air Force. A new location has also been selected for this airport at Fateh Jung. Construction at this new site, just 5 kilometers from Islamabad, is underway and it is estimated to be completed by 2010. The airports in Islamabad are the major points through which foreign tourists can enter the Pakistani capital.
Among the Islamabad airports, the major one is the Islamabad International Airport. It also houses some Pakistan Air Force Squadrons, but these are cargo and liaison planes. The present location of the airport is at Rawalpindi in Punjab. Military flights as well as civilian flights are hosted by the airport. When a massive earthquake hit Pakistan-administered Kashmir, a major operation took off from this airport.
On January, 2005 the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) announced the start of the first ever green field airport at Islamabad. On completion it will be one of the major airports in Islamabad. The new structure will comprise a state-of-the-art terminal building, control tower, and runway with provision for a second runway, taxiways, apron, cargo complex and hangar. It will be suitable for the latest of the new generation aircrafts. It is being designed to handle 6.5 million passengers per annum and 80,000 metric tones of cargo. The name of the new airport has been announced by the CAA to be Gandhara International Airport.
Your Islamabad travel will be facilitated by the new airport. Already being considered to be one of the top airports in Islamabad, if not the whole of Pakistan, this airport will serve a number of airlines. These are presently being served by the airport at Rawalpindi. These include Airblue, British Airways, Emirates, Gulf Air, Thai Airways International and UK International Airlines. The Pakistan International Airlines links numerous international cities to Islamabad.
