Frere Hall was constructed during the British period, and is one of the most well preserved buildings of Pakistan. The building was constructed to honor the memory of Sir Henry Edward Frere (1815- 1884) who was instrumental behind the economic development of Karachi. Lying in the heart of the city of Karachi, opposite to the Marriott Hotel and the US consulate, the building lies nestled within the Jinnah park. Frere Hall is situated next to Sind Club.
The building has served as the Town Hall and also the center of the sociocultural activities of Karachi during the British period. The building is an excellent specimen of the Venetian Gothic style of architecture. The construction of the building started in the year month of August 1863 and was completed in the year 1865. Frere Hall is a popular tourist attraction in Karachi.
The ground floor of Frere Hall is a library. The library is named Liaquat National Library in the name of Liaquat Ali khan, the first prime minister of independent Pakistan, . The library houses one of the largest collection of books in Pakistan. There are more than seventy thousand books in the library, and comprises invaluable and rare manuscripts, newspapers, dictionaries atlases and books of technology.
The upper floor of Frere Hall is an art gallery housing the works of the celebrated Pakistani calligrapher and painter Sadequain. The place is one of the must visit places in Karachi and can be easily accessed from all points of the city.
