Idgah Mosque

The Idgah Mosque is one of the major tourist attractions in Multan. You will be able to easily locate the Idgah Mosque as it is on the main Multan-Lahore highway in the Northeast of the city. Come and visit the Idgah Mosque and delve deep into the rich past of the city.

The Idgah Mosque was built in 1735 AD by the Nawab Abdul Samad Khan. At that time he was the governor of Multan. The Idgah Mosque is a very large and spacious mosque. Within the precincts there is a huge courtyard and along with it is a massive chamber for chanting prayers. This prayer chamber in the Idgah Mosque measures 250 feet by 54 feet. It has got seven beautiful domes that have got some very intricate designs on them. The exterior of the Idgah Mosque has glazed blue tiles and the interior is embellished with colorful mosaics. The renovated Idgah Mosque has a central water channel, a new grassy plot with flower beds in the court-yard.

The Idgah Mosque suffered extensive damages during the Sikh period because it was being used for military purposes. Diwan Mul Raj arranged this place for providing refuge to the two British officers Mr. Vans Agnew and Lt. Anderson. Both the British officers were killed during the 1848-49 siege.

The British had used the Idgah Mosque for many years as the Court of the Deputy Commissioner. In 1863 it was returned to the Muslims but still it was in a state of decadence and disrepair until 1891 when Rs.1, 00,000 was raised by the public. The same amount was provided by the Government and the Idgah Mosque was repaired thoroughly.
