Fort Bala Hisar also remained the residence of legendary Afghan king, Ahmed Shah Durrani and his son Taimur Shah Durrani. After the Battle of Nowshera, the Sikhs captured Fort Bala Hisar in 1834. The Sikhs destroyed the fort and it was Sher Singh, who on the orders of his father Ranjit Singh built Fort Bala Hisar in Peshawar with unbaked bricks.

The British rebuilt Fort Bala Hisar after they captured the Sikh Shahi areas in 1849. The British replaced the mud wall of Fort Bala Hisar with bricks. The reconstruction of the new buildings has covered the space between the old city and the fort.
