Kyber Pass

Kyber Pass is one of the major Tourist attractions of Peshawar. The Kyber Pass is a mountain pass, which connects two major countries, namely Pakistan and Afghanistan. The pass was regarded as a very important trade route in the ancient times. A stretch of the Kyber Pass had remained controversial for a long time. However visitors to Peshawar find this city to be the best base for exploring this beautiful hilly route.

It is said that the Kyber Pass stretches from Jamrud in Pakistan to Torkham, which is about 15 kilometers from the city of Peshawar. A journey through this pass was considered very adventurous and dangerous earlier. The travelers utilizing this pass had to pass a point, which is as narrow as 15 meters between two canyons in order to go to the other side. Landi Kotal is the peak of this Pass. The summit of the Kyber Pass has gained immense political importance, as now it has become a major military base.

Travelers coming from all across the globe to the city of Peshawar often visit the Kyber Pass. Its popularity owes its origin to its name being mentioned many a times in the history of the world too. History says that the Indo Aryans used this pass in order to reach India. On the other hand Alexander the Great also traveled through this pass and began invading the eastern countries. The Kyber Pass also plays a vital role in the coming of Mughals to India.

The inhabitants of the nearby villages, which consist mostly of the Pashtun clans of Afridis and Shinwaris, earlier regarded the pass as their property and charged money for traveling through it. The Shinwaris still preserve this right and perhaps this is their only means of livelihood.

Kyber Pass in Peshawar also played a major role in the hippie trail. Thousands of westerners and Japanese people moved in to this side of the country through the pass. Kyber Pass is still a major trade route between Pakistan and Afganistan.
