Murree Brewery: History

The Murree Brewery in Rawalpindi was formed when the stronghold established by the Sikhs was taken over by the British Regency. The Murree Brewery came into focus after 1857 when the British Crown formally extended sovereignty over India and a planned administration originated in the Punjab. The Murree Brewery of Rawalpindi was begun in 1860 to meet the beer requirements of the army. The Brewery was established and incorporated a year later at Ghora Galli, near the Murree resort town.

Between 1885 and 1890 the English East India Company established breweries in Rawalpindi and Quetta and acquired interests in Ootacumand (India) and Norailiya (Ceylon). A distillery was also established in Rawalpindi beside the Murree Brewery. With the passage of time, the virtues of beer and barley malt as a soft alcoholic beverage picked up among the local population who swiftly became ardent consumers.

The Murree Brewery produces a wide variety of liquors, beers and non alcoholic products. These include Murree’s Classic Beer, Murree’s Millennium Beer, Eight and Twelve years old Single Malt Whiskies, Lite Export Pils, Vintage with a blend of a Scotch Grain Whisky, Bolskaya Vodka, Silver Top Gin, and Doctor’s Brandy.

In 1997-1998 and 1998-1999, the Murree Brewery was judged among the top 25 public companies by the Karachi Stock Exchange.
