Excursions from Lae

There are number of places where the tourist can go for Excursions from Lae. The second largest city in Papua New Guinea, it is also a major place of tourist attraction promoted by the international airport and flexible road system throughout the city. Excursions from Lae include places like Wau, Bulolo, Finschhafen and Salamaua which are trademarks to the city's growing popularity.

From the anonymity of a small mission station, Lae has developed progressively with the 1920 gold rush at Wau which totally transformed the landscape of Lae. Today it has become a major industrial and commercial center facilitated by a good harbor and sea transport. Wau is a town in the same country, and became famous with the gold rush when gold diggers began to arrive in the city from Salamaua coast through the Black Cat Track which is a rough track in the Morobe province. Though much of the mineral reserve of gold has been extracted, the region abounds in natural beauty which is a more important reserve for tourists here.

Bulolo is another town in the Morobe province of Papua New Guinea where Excursions from Lae can be done which has become famous for its gold digging sites along the river with the same name. Gradually the gold petered out, but the traces of their work can be noticed along the the river. There are beautiful pine forests along the Bulolo valley, with mountainous terrain and these are important places of scenic beauty that would surely captivate you. Bulolo has been lately connected by a road that goes to Lae along its river valley as well as the Markham river valleys. Due to continuous depletion of the natural resources in the late years, efforts have now been made for afforestation and an extensive tract of land have been gathered for the purpose. These in turn have become visiting sites, with lots of perpetual greenery.

The other important place around Lae which will enthrall you is Finschhafen, which boasts of a range of coral reefs, along its entire coast. The area was previously colonized by Germans in the year 1885. Now however, with excellent accommodation facilities, opportunities for snorkelling and swimming the place is exquisitely beautiful with a lot of historical interest. You can also avail plenty of souvenirs in the form of Tami Island bowls which are beautifully carved and can be got from the nearby village of Malasiga.

Salamaua is another nearby island of Lae, which gained importance during the war. You will see plenty of war time relics, giving a different aura to the peaceful, idyllic island. It will also have excellent grounds for fishing, swimming, walking along the beach, picnicking and snorkeling.
