Lae has evolved into one of the most beautiful Tourist Destinations in Papua New Guinea. Currently, the Rainforest Habitat has been purpose built to create a display of some 15,000 native and exotic plants and 21 species of birds. You will find here the magnificent Raggiana Bird of Paradise apart from crocodiles, lizards, butterflies, turtles and several species of frogs and fish.
Lae, being a town from the gold rush era, was the last stop for American aviator, Amelia Earhardt. You will find here relics preserved in many sites from the occupation of the Japanese during the Second World War. You can also take a tour of the surrounding Morobe Province which is the gateway to the Highlands and the Islands in the Huon Gulf. With dense rainforests, pine trees, volcanoes, fertile valleys, remnants of WW2 artillery and cattle farms, it is a beautiful region. The hinterland and coast of Morobe Province is excellent for sightseeing. It is famous for its flora and fauna and numerous walking tracks, particularly near the Wau and Bulolo areas.
