Mount Hagen, one of the most famous Tourist Destinations in Papua New Guinea, is the third largest city and also the capital of the Western Highlands Province. The old eroded volcano Mount Hagen, located about 24 km to the northwest, has given the city its name.
The province of Western Highlands is characterized by lowland rainforest, alpine grasslands, soaring peaks and lots more. The capital city of Mount Hagen is a bustling commercial centre, popularly known as the "Wild frontier" of the Highlands. You can take a trip to the Western part of the Province which offers spectacular walking and trekking adventures. The Wahgi Valley is a beautiful natural tract of lush greens, mighty rivers, verdant rainforest and manicured gardens. You will find here several walks and you can choose according to your time and skill. The summit of Mt Wilhelm at a height of 4509 meters, can offer a challenging experience to expert trekkers. It can be reached from Mount Hagen.
Visit the Saturday market in Mount Hagen which is a sort of a meeting place for traders from all over the province. The very sight is a fascinating one with shops of fruits and vegetables, birds, animals and hordes of people in bright attires. You will find men traditionally donning long bread and women wearing an array of brilliant scarves and carrying their brightly colored string bags. These bags, known as bilums, are used to carry everything from babies to firewood. It is interesting to note that these are made by threading an entire length of string through each loop. Pick up some traditionally made bilums as souvenir items.
Visit the Western Highlands Cultural Centre in Mount Hagen. It features a reconstructed village hut and features a museum with exhibits of artifact, handicrafts and curios. Experience the sing-sings which are held regularly throughout the province. These are actually gatherings of clans in traditional costume where ritualistic song and dance is performed for ceremonial reasons. This is a wonderful opportunity to get a glimpse of the rich traditional Highlands social structure.
