Geography: The Parque Nacional do Iguacu is situated at an altitude of 150 to 740 m in the latitudes of 25°41'?S, 54°26'?W. It is just above the conflux of the Parana and the Iguacu Rivers, in the border area of Brazil and Argentina. The park falls under the bio – geographical province of Brazilian Rain Forests. The soil is semi – lateritic which is very infertile and the rocks are the composed of Mesozoic Basalt. The forest experiences a humid and subtropical type of climate. The Average temperatures in the summer are 25 degrees centigrade and in winter it is 15 degrees with annual rainfall of 1700 mm.

Economy: The maintenance of this national park depends on the revenue it earns from the tourists all year round. This is the only economical activity that keeps the National Park going.

History: The region where the park has been established was the home of the Guarani people. After them it came into the hands of the Spanish and the Portuguese. The Park was legally established in the year 1939. After the first steps were taken in the direction of protecting the Iguacu Falls, in the year 1916, the National Park was established by the Federal Decree number 1035. This park has been under the UNESCO World Heritage Sites ever since.

Society and Cultural Life: The Guarani culture is still seen in the way of living of the local inhabitants. Portuguese and Spanish influences are also evident. The park itself has no human inhabitation but the nearby town, of Foz do Iguacu has over 200, 000 people living. This town is the third most important tourist destination in Brazil.


Administration and Government: According to the governance rules, this park is managed by the IBDF or the Instituto Brasileiro de Desenvolvimento Florestal. Since this is a World Heritage Site, there can be no private ownership of any part of the forest. The whole forest is owned by the Federal Government. The park is taken care of, administrative staffs, park guards and general workers who are headed by one Director.

Transport System:

Travels to Parque Nacional do Iguaçu– Travel to the National Park by taking a bus from the Brazilian town of Foz do Iguacu.
Travel in Parque Nacional do Iguaçu– The best way to travel inside the park will be by walking. Biking down the forest roads is another way. You can also try out canoeing if you want to add adventure to your travel.

Educational Institutions: The national park encourages a lot of scientific research to assess the resources of the forest. For the students of botany and zoology, the park provides a whole new world for increasing the horizon.
