Ventanillas de Otuzco

Ventanillas de Otuzco is one of the significant tourist attractions in Cajamarca which draw a lot of international travelers worldwide every year. It is situated on the Llanguil Hill at a distance of 8 kilometers from the city of Cajamarca. Ventanillas de Otuzco is basically an archeological site in Cajamarca where you will find various rock excavations.

Ventanillas de Otuzco is a part of the ancient memorial park. This place is well maintained by the authorities. Previously people used to come to this place and pay homage to their ancestors. Through various excavations the archeologists have drawn an inference that there were two types of niches- one was the simple type and the other was the multiple type which comprised of a corridor flanked by several lateral niches.

The term Ventanillas means windows. The people of Cajamarca prepared various slots carved on the rocks as inferred from the explorations carried out by the archeologists. You can see a number of Ventanillas in the surrounding areas of Cajamarca Otuzco and Combayo.

The dead bodies were buried in a special way. Initially the bodies were laid on the ground. After some time the skull and the bones were put in the niches along with the belongings that were buried with the dead. The archeologists inferred that this process was carried on for the important leaders and their family. It is also said that some of the windows were used more than once even after Cajamarca was conquered by the Incas and later during the Spanish dominion.

This archeological centre in Cajamarca portrays the Caxamarca culture which is located in the north eastern side of Cajamarca. This construction is built according to megalithic style and was sculpted in the rock. Among the various megalithic constructions you will find the Cumbe Mayo which is one of the biggest megalithic constructions. Here you will see the maximum usage of hydraulic engineering.

If you visit the Ventanillas de Otuzco in Cajamarca you will also find the galleries of grave. Some of these bear animal carvings.

Ventanillas de Otuzco is indeed an exciting place where you should visit on your trip to Cajamarca. This ancient site has a lot of significance from where you can learn about the culture and tradition of the ancient Cajamarca people.
