The Lima Cathedral till today remains as one of the best examples of colonial architecture that has given the city its identity. The Lima Cathedral is located in the main square of the city that is known as the Plaza Mayor. This cathedral was built on the model of the Seville Cathedral in Spain.
The construction of the Lima Cathedral was started in the year 1535 and though there were numerous revisions done before the final outcome. What stands today is one of the closest reflections of the Seville Cathedral in Spain and it has been taken care that the design is not compromised upon.
The Lima Cathedral is dedicated to Roma Catholicism that was originally devoted to Our Lady of Assumption. The cathedral has survived numerous earthquakes. In 1609 the vaults were destroyed and then rebuilt in 1615. But this new vault was built in Gothic style with a lower height.
