Chavin de Huantar was built at around 900 B.C. The civilization mostly depended on agriculture. Agriculture was the dominant contributor to the economy. The city's location at the head of the Marañon River was conducive for agriculture. Now the ruin is a verdant green landscape at the base of the mountains with several structures like the Circular plaza, The Old Temple and The New temple.
From whatever that has been found at Chavin de Huantar, it indicates that social instability and upheaval began to occur between 500 and 300 B.C. The larger Chavin civilization began to decline at round about the same time. Large ceremonial sites were abandoned, some unfinished, and were replaced by villages and agricultural land.
Roughly at around 500 B.C. a small village replaced the Circular Plaza. Various groups occupied the plaza. Stone carvings were used for making the houses. Very early in the history of Chavin de Huantar, the Old Temple was constructed. This was an inward-facing structure made up of several passageways. These passageways were built around a circular courtyard. This structure has obelisks and stone monuments. The stone monuments have carvings depicting caymans, jaguars and various other anthropomorphic forms.
