Surfing and Water Sports can be traced back even to the ancient times. According to archaeological remains, ancient Peruvians had a good hold over the sea as they were into fishing and also explored sea for sport. During the pre-Inca eras, the Mochicas and Chimus were experts in these aspects and specially in using small handmade boats of bulrushes. That ancient tradition of using bulrush canoes still continues. Caballitos de Totora is used in the Northern beaches while Huanchaco is used in Trujillo and Pimentel in Chiclayo.
The most popular and widely practiced water sport along the Peruvian Coast is surfing and the most popular beaches are the Lima Waikiki and the northern shores. The first South American Surfing Club was established in Lima Waikiki. What make it so popular are its left and right waves. There are other beaches like the La Pamilla, Barranquito and Redondo.
