Geography: Phoenix is located in the Salt River Valley in the central party of Arizona. It is situated right at the center of the Sonoran Desert. The McDowell Desert surrounds the city. It experiences an arid climate with summer temperatures going above 40 degree centigrade.
History: The Hohokam civilization was the first inhabitants of the land in 700 AD. Jack Swilling, in the year 1867 brought in urbanization by building canals for irrigating farm lands. The incorporation of the city took place in the year 1881 by the Phoenix Charter Bill.

Economy: Even though the most important economic activity in the city was agriculture, in the later years the city developed enough to be the home of three major Fortune 500 companies. Film and media industries play an important role in boosting the economy. Apart from that the American military has a strong presence here with 3 military bases. The tourism and golf industry also generates income for the city.
Administration and Government: The commission form of government serves the city. The City Council is headed by the Mayor who is responsible for governing the city. Phil Gordon is the Mayor of the city at present.
Society and Cultural Life: The major religions of the city are the Catholic and Mormon with the whites and African Americans taking up the majority of the population.
The cultural lu8ife of the people mainly consist of outdoor and indoor sports, performing arts and the film and television medium.

Educational Institutions: The important centers of education in the city are the Arizona state University and the Western Governors University. The Phoenix Union High School District takes care of the public schools in the city. The University of Advancing Technology imparts technical education to the students.
