Santa Cruz Monastery

Santa Cruz Monastery, one of the popular Coimbra Tourist attractions, is situated in Coimbra in Portugal. It is a national monument. It was founded in the year 1131. In course of time it underwent alterations. Much of the innovation work was carried out during the reign of Manuel in the 15 th and the 16th centuries by renowned architects like Boytaca and Nicholas de Chantarene. The monastery was dedicated to St Augustine Order.

Old Cathedral

The Old Cathedral is built in the form of a fortress. It is situated in Se Velha in Coimbra. The cathedral was built during the rule of of Afonso I Henriques in the 12 th century. A lane consisting of a series of steps will lead to the cathedral. The cathedral is characterized by a huge Romanesque west doorway and crenellated walls. The Porta Especiosa doorway is situated towards the northern side of the church. The architecture of this doorway reflects Renaissance style. The interior of the Cathedral done in the Romanesque style houses 3 aisles. The attractions of this cathedral are the tomb of Bishop of Almeida, a huge altar built in the Gothic style. History has it that Dom Jao was crowned in 1385 as the King of Portugal in the square facing the cathedral.
