Faro Travel: History

Faro wields undisputable administrative control over the entire region of Algarve that has a total population of over 55.000 people. The city is dotted by several ancient Arab and Roman sites. Most of the important buildings that one can see in this city today were constructed after the catastrophic earthquakes of 1532 and 1755. This 8th century town was originally inhabited by the Moors who christened this city as Ossonoba and developed it into an important trading port until the year 1249.

Faro gradually became the administrative center of the entire Algarve area as the city of Silves failed to retain its importance. In the year 1596, this city was sacked by the Earl of Essex and his fellow crusaders on their journey to the Holy Land and they took away a valuable collection of books from the palace of the Bishop of Faro. Today, these books form an important part of the voluminous collection at the Bodleian Library in Oxford, England.
