Funchal is the capital of the Madeira Islands an integral part of Portugal. As the largest city on the islands, Funchal was founded by Joao Gonçalves Zarco in the year 1421 and was elevated to city status by King Manuel I in 1508.

Funchal had a rapid population growth in recent years. This has been possible because of the presence of a good harbor and a pleasant climate that got combined with an excellent geographical position. Today, Funchal is a very modern city with over 104, 000 inhabitants.

The city can easily be explored by foot. So nearby are the buildings that no matter where the hotel is located in the city you will find no difficulty in walking into the city center to delight at its sights and sounds.

Funchal is located in an absolutely unique area. The amphitheatre of Funchal city begins at the harbor and rises almost 1200 meters high on gentle slopes. Probably the most central point is the “Se” Cathedral built between 1493 and 1514 by Gil Eanes. It is one of Madeira’s numerous treasures.

From many historical monuments, squares and streets in the capital of Funchal to mesmerizing gardens, breathtaking villages, beautiful landscapes, awe inspiring volcanic caves, rugged coast lines, wonderful natural beaches and, last but not least, splendid scenic beauties views.

Funchal has an abundance of funcho or fennel growing in the areas around. It is from this that the place has got its name. Part of Funchal Municipality is Ilhas Selvagens or Savage Islands, one nature reserve 160 kilometers south of Funchal. Visiting this reserve is always a unique experience for you.

Funchal is bypassed by a superhighway to the north east and southwest which accesses to Santa Cruz, the Madeira airport and Ribeira Brava. So gaining access to Funchal involves no hassle at all.
