Porto is one of the top-notch Tourist Destinations in Portugal, lying in the northern side of the country. Porto is the second largest city in Portugal and the city is known for the world famous Port Wine that was named after the city. Porto is one of the great cultural and administrative centers of Portugal. UNESCO has declared Ribeira, the historic Center of Porto, a World Heritage Site in 1996.

Porto organizes many popular events, one of the most popular of which is St. John that is held on the night of 23 to 24 of June. There is a long tradition of having vase with bush basil decorated with a small poem. On this day, people usually eat sardines and boiled potatoes together with red wine. At midnight, people gather on the streets to see the wide display of fireworks, next to the river.

Another major event of Porto is Queima das Fitas that is held on the second week of May. During every night of this festive week, a series of concerts takes place on the Queimodromo, next to the city’s park. Local residents as well as foreigners gather in large numbers to enjoy this week long event.

If you really want to taste the authentic Portuguese dishes, then you should come to Porto in Portugal. Porto is a home to a number of traditional Portuguese cuisines. Try out the typical dishes of Portugal such as Tripas a Moda do Porto. Bacalhau a Gomes de Sa is other typical dish born in Porto and popular all through out Portugal. The Frenchie is the most famous popular native snacks in Porto. Do not forget to just sip in Port wine, an internationally renowned wine.

There are beautiful holiday resorts like the cosmopolitan beach of Espinho, busy ports like Matosinhos, with splendid seafood and traditional fishing towns like Povoa de Varzim. Vila Nova de Gaia is the place where Port wine is made and can even be tasted. On a lovely sunny day, you can drive along many calm roads with wonderful views over the river or enjoy a rugged and still untouched coastline.
