Geography: The Pyramids of Giza are situated in the Valley of Giza, a part of the greater Cairo in Egypt. The latitudinal locations of the pyramids are 29°58'44.68?N, 31°08'02.58?E. it is located in the Giza Plateau, in the periphery of Cairo. The Pyramids consist of the Pyramid of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure. The ravages of time have only allowed the Pyramid of Khafre to retain its original limestone casing.
History: The Pyramids are an epitome of the ancient Egyptian civilization. The first in the line of the great Pyramids is the Step Pyramid of Saqqara built to contain the body of the King Djoser who died around 2649 BCE. The Pyramid of the king Khufu was built between the years 2589 2566 B.C. His son, Khafre oversaw the construction of the second largest pyramid, the Khafre Pyramid, during his reign. This pyramid was built during the years 2558 and 2532 B.C. the third pyramid was built by Menkaure who ruled from 2490 2472 B.C. The Sphinx is another important structure built in the complex of the pyramids. With the head of a lion and the body of a Pharaoh, it is believed to be the Guardian Spirit of the entire pyramid complex.
