The current format of the qualifying tournaments in Rugby World Cup was introduced in the second tournament. Prior to this, there was no such qualifying process.
The sixteen places were occupied by the seven eligible member nations by default and the rest were filled by invitation. The format that is in use at present is an updated one according to which the twenty participating nations have to proceed through a number of qualifying stages. The twenty national rugby teams compete with each other for a period of one month. The entire tournament is divided into two stages, a group and a knock out.
