| Portugal will be playing for the first time in the Rugby World Cup 2007. Portugal got the coveted final position in Rugby World Cup Teams - Pool C after they beat Uruguay 24-23 on aggregate.
In fact this inclusion of Portugal was the only unique aspect if we compare the 20 teams of 2003 Rugby World Cup.
Portugal is represented by the Portugal national rugby union team, whose nickname is "os lobos," meaning “the wolves" in Portuguese. Portugal started playing in 1935 and they are now competing in the European Nations Cup. Federação Portuguesa de Rugby manages the Portugal national rugby union team. Portugal will be playing in the Rugby World Cup 2007 in Pool C along with New Zealand, Italy, Romania and Scotland.
Portugal surprised everyone in the recent years with their success. In the 2003-4 European Nations Cup they emerged winner and the success rate continued. They were adjudged third in the 2005-6 events. Portugal was able to display their skills to the international arena of rugby during IRB Sevens World Series circuit.
The year 2006-2007 will find Portugal competing for the first time at every IRB sevens event .
