History of Russia

History of Russia tells us about the evolution of the former USSR. The History of Russia throws light on the several crises the republics of USSR had to go through. History of Russia helps us to know about the rich culture and heritage of the country.

In the 7th century, the tribes of Eastern Slavs, who were the ancient ancestors of Russians, occupied Eastern European Valley. The first known East Slavic state was formed along the Dnepr river valley. Prince Rurik founded the state with the capital in town. So the country was called Kievan Rus’

In 13th century, Kievan Rus’ was attacked by the Mongol Empire. They were defeated one by one. Under Mongols a small regional center Moscow developed rapidly. Moscow was a small town at north east borders of Kievan Rus’. However, several trade routes passed through the town.

In 1682, Tsar Peter started to rule Russia. Peter the Great brought about the development of Russia. During his rule, Russia became a powerful state armed with modern institutions and technologies. In 1721, Peter declared Russia an Empire and became the Emperor.

After the demise of Peter, Russian armies fought versus Prussia, Ottoman Empire, France, Persia, and Sweden. As the result of this war Crimea, part of Poland, Georgia, Northern Caucuses, Finland, more territories in Siberia became a part of Russia.

The 20th century in Russia started in a bad note. Russia lost the war against Japan. The consequences of the war were hard to underestimate. This failure showed the ineffectiveness of the state system. This lead to numerous riots and strikes all over Russia. The uprisings lasted for two years and were so dangerous that later they came to be known as the First Russian Revolution.

After the First World War the situation worsened. The situation was used by the Bolsheviks. They became popular among soldiers and workers because of their populist slogans. Led by the charismatic leader Vladimir Lenin the Bolsheviks revolted on October 25th 1917. It took four more years of Civil war for Bolsheviks to get control of the whole Russia.

After the death of Lenin, Iosef Stalin became the head of the Communist party and the state in 1922. Soon, the new state named the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was proclaimed.

Soviet leaders which followed Stalin followed his ideas. They developed the army and the industry and sciences whish served the needs of the army. The leaders included Kruschev, Brezhnev, Andropov, and Gorbachov. During Gorbachav’s tenure the republics of USSR broke up into smaller countries.
